Historic rise in grain prices and environmental damage
There are growing concerns that the food crisis that plagued the world's poorest countries (1 in 7.6 people goes hungry) will return.
"80% of children who go hungry are from countries producing surplus cereals"
In recent years, grain shortages have been exacerbated each year by droughts and other extreme weather conditions around the world, as well as delayed action to address population growth in developing countries. Meanwhile, grain producers in developing countries have switched to producing grain for livestock for the highly profitable food importing industrialised countries, and some importing countries are under-exploiting their abundant resources, relying on imports for 70-90% of their grain.
"World Bank puts brakes on burgeoning factory type livestock production in developing countries"
In the past, the World Bank invested heavily in large-scale livestock projects in developing countries, but has changed course. The reason is that "poor people are excluded, environmental destruction is progressing, and there is a danger that the safety and security of food in the world will be threatened."
Water resource issues
livestock industry that uses too much water
The amount of water used for 1 kg of beef can produce 2,000 kg of grain.
・1 liter of water is needed to produce 1 kg of grain
・2,000 liters of water is required to produce 1 kg of beef
The aim is circular agriculture
Circular agriculture is agriculture that reduces the burden on the natural environment by reducing the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, while recycling the resources used.
Grass to Bamboo
Bamboo grows quickly and its advantage as a grass substitute is that it grows faster than other trees because it has 'growth points' at each node, which stimulate growth through cell division and other processes. Note that the rate of growth slows down after two to three months above ground, and most of it ceases to grow after two years.
Grains to Hemp seeds
Cannabis plants are resistant to diseases and pests, so they do not require pesticides or chemical fertilizers, and can be grown with just a little water and organic fertilizer. Hemp seeds can be grown year-round in diverse regions of the world, and can be harvested in about 90 days after planting.
Livestock waste is reused as compost
Appropriately composting livestock manure and returning it to farmland contributes to suppressing greenhouse gas emissions derived from livestock manure processing and reducing the amount of chemical fertilizer used.
